ETS training material for hospital wards now available in English

For a long time, ETS in-hospital patient materials have been available for the Emergency department, Surgery department, and Intensive Care Units. Now, the materials have been extended to the final part of the health care chain – hospital wards.

The new set can be used as part of a large-scale hospital exercise or for individual ward training. It includes patients for Medical, Orthopedic, and Surgical departments.

Comprehensive training materials

This new set stands out from other in-hospital patient banks by offering a wide range of supporting materials in addition to the patient cases. These include:

  • Signs for creating a hospital ward layout
  • Staff and critical resource symbols

Included is also a document containing each patient’s latest NEWS, test results, ongoing activities, and transfer restrictions. Instructors can use this extra information to provide participants with realistic updates and information during the exercise.

Evaluation and outcomes

Just like other ETS in-hospital patients, the ward in-hospital patients can be evaluated using the ETS surge capacity outcome method. The evaluation template helps identify whether decisions made for each patient are correct, pose health risks, or result in overuse of hospital resources.

Flexible use and applications

The hospital ward training material can be used for a variety of purposes, including:

  • Testing the hospital’s and ward’s capacity to manage a major incident
  • Assessing the ward’s surge capacity
  • Practicing ward evacuation in a patient-safe manner
  • Training ward organization in the event of a fire
  • Practicing logistics and patient-safe strategies for freeing up hospital beds

This addition completes the ETS in-hospital patient series and provides hospitals with a powerful tool for improving preparedness and patient safety across the entire care chain.

The material has been tested in several exercises both in Sweden and abroad, including during exercises held at the EuSEM conference. Special thanks to the ETS faculty in the United Kingdom for their valuable support in reviewing the English translation.

The material includes 100 patients in the medium set and 75 patients in the small set, featuring a mix of cases for Medical, Orthopedic, and Surgical wards. It also comes with signs, staff and critical resource symbols, templates, an instructor’s manual, and more.
