Decontamination at hospital set - version 3

A Decontamination at Hospital set version 3 is now released for all certified ETS instructors. The Decontamination at hospital set contains of a victim bank with victims exposed to either ammonia or cyanide. The victims have been exposed to various degrees of the Chemicals and are developed for the purpose of running simulation exercises were the scenario results in a need to decontaminate the victims Before treating them in the hospital.

Developments made for the Decontamination at hospital set:

  • new patients
  • new management cards including management cards for treatment at ECMO unit
  • new patient outcome categories with the possibility to evaluate care at chemically exposed victims
  • new markings/stickers
  • scenario guideline

The decontamination at hospital set contains of 100 victims, in various degrees exposed to a chemical. Victim C1 to C50 are exposed to ammonia and victim C101-C150 are exposed to cyanide. Some of the victims are in need of specialised ECMO care. These victims have an extra management card for treatment at ECMO unit.

100 patients with management cards. The management cards are available as level 2 and level 3 symbolising the different level of care. Level 2 can be either an outpatient clinic or a Forward surgical team (FST) with limited emergency surgery capability. Level 3 is a theatre hospital with limited capability and 30 days ICU holding capability.

Decontamination 01

New patient outcome categories for chemical injuries have been developed in collboration with chemical experts in Sweden. With the new patient outcome categories it is possible to evaluate care of patients exposed to ammonia and cyanide.

New treatment markings such as inhalation of bronchodilator, steroid, eye decontamination and antidote are included in the material. There are also staff symbols in protection suits, stretchers, showers, signs showing undressing time, decontamination time and magnetic signs for organising decontamination. A scenario guideline 'Taking care of chemical contaminated patients on the ED' is included and show an example of how to plan, run and evaluate a decontamination exercise at the Emergency department.
The ED should be set up with the regular Hospital set material.

The material have been developed by KMC - Center for Teaching and Research in Disaster Medicine & Traumatology/ETS Competence centre in Sweden and Isala klinieken, Netwerk Acute Zorg/ETS faculty Zwolle, The Netherlands with subject matter expertice from specialists in decontamination from SPC - Stockholm Prehospital Centre in Sweden.

The material have been tested and validated in a number of exercises in Holland December 2012-January 2013 and in Sweden May 2013.
