The ETS Competence Center held together with the ETS Japanese faculty, a meeting with faculty representatives and ETS Senior Instructors at the WADEM conference on May 3 2025. The meeting was held in Keio Plaza Hotel in Tokyo, Japan.
The ETS Competence center opened the meeting by welcoming the participants and introducing the agenda. The ETS Competence Center team introduced themselves, followed by brief presentations from all participants. In total, 24 people attended: 14 delegates from Japan, 3 from Australia, the 4 members of the Swedish team, and 3 technical assistants.
After the introductions, participants shared their main focus areas, emphasizing key themes such as preparedness, hospital readiness, the roles of nurses and physicians, as well as education and training in the context of disaster and emergency management.

Following the presentations, participants engaged in two group discussions. The first focused on the challenges faced by Senior instructors, while the second explored the qualities and characteristics that define a “good” senior instructor. Professor Okudera from the ETS Japan faculty shared reflections on the use of ETS in Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also described how ETS had been used to evaluate healthcare readiness in Hiroshima through five different scenarios. Drawing from experiences during the Fukushima emergency and hospital exercises, he provided insights into Japan’s growing ETS infrastructure, which now includes the Toyama ETS Center and three active sub-centers in Miyazaki, Chubu, and Fukushima.
Two posters describing the development of the ETS ICRC Humanitarian set and the ETS in-hospital ward material, were presented to the participants. The posters were also presented on the WADEM congress.
