Burn injury simulation

What capacity do we have to take care of a large number of burn casualties in Sweden?

Based on this issue, representatives from the County Councils of Dalarna, Uppsala and Östergötland planned a capacity simulation exercise. Invited representatives were the national burn care units in Sweden (University Hospital in Linköping and Akademiska Hospital in Uppsala), Crisis coordinators from each County Council, the National Board of Health and Wellfare, security staff from Högfjällshotellet in Sälen, ambulance service in Dalarna, Emergency Call centre, both regional and national level.

The scenario used as the basis for discussions was a fire at a night club on a Friday night 23.00 at the hotel Högfjälsshotellet in Sälen in northern Sweden. Sälen is a popular winter resort close to Norway and the nightclub had 400 visitors. The aim was to improve knowledge on the management of a large number of burn patients from a national perspective and try to identify alert and emergency routines and also the cooperation and interaction between involved county councils. During the exercise was also tested how a national coordinating mechanism for the burn care might operate in a major incident with a large number of burn casualties. The time frame used was the management of the first 24 hours after the incident.

Before the exercise, an extensive inventory was made with regard to all available and possible transportation resources, planned capacity of various hospitals, ICU beds and burn ICU beds both in Sweden and in Europe. This was demonstrated by using Emergo Train System. New burn patients and preventable death categories was tested and validated during this simulation.
