Emergo Train System (ETS)

Emergo Train System (ETS) is a pedagogic educational simulation system developed at the Centre for Teaching and Research in Disaster Medicine and Traumatology (KMC) at the University of Linköping Sweden and is used in several countries around the world.

The system is simple to use and not requiring sophisticated equipment. It is based on magnet symbols on whiteboards representing patients, staff and resources, movable markers indicating priority and treatment and a large patient bank with protocol giving results of treatment based on trauma score.

Organisations dealing with disaster managements must have rules to follow. These rules must be accepted and wide spread within the organisation. If not, there is a risk of chaos, unfavourable results and it will be impossible to evaluate performances.

This is also true regarding a simulation system. There must be a set of rules, a doctrine, and ETS can be used with any kind of doctrine. It can also be used to point out the need for a doctrine and of course to teach various doctrines or to test the effect of using different doctrines.

The most important data from disasters and major incidents is the patient outcome. Patient outcome is the ultimate indicator on how a situation was managed. It is therefore crucial that this is reflected in the simulation system.

The ETS way of addressing this is by including performance indicators for management including logistics and for each and every patient symbol in the system. If defined measures are not performed within defined time frames the patient may suffer a risk of unfavourable outcome.
