Emergo Train System® (ETS) is a pedagogical educational simulation system for exercise/education in disaster Medicine. Emergo Train System® is owned by the County of Östergötland Sweden and is administered and developed by the Centre for Teaching and Research in Disaster Medicine & Traumatology (KMC) at the University of Linköping Sweden.
Emergo Train System® derives from the need of a new tool, for education within disaster medicine. It proved to be a useful tool and has not only been used at KMC, but also in other places in Sweden as well as several countries around the world.
The system is simple to use and not requiring sophisticated equipment. It is based on magnet symbols on white boards representing patients, staff and resources, movable markers indicating priority and treatment and a large patient bank with protocol giving results of treatment based on trauma score.
The ETS is not a course in disaster medicine itself and not a concept that tells how to handle a major incident but an educational tool for training and testing the preparedness and management of major accidents and disasters. This means that it does not compete with any educational concept or doctrine but it is a tool that can be used in a variety of educations, from basic to advanced level, in the field of disaster medicine in any country.
The most important data from disasters and major incidents is the patient outcome. Patient outcome is the ultimate indicator on how a situation was managed. It is therefore crucial that this is reflected in the simulation system. The ETS way of addressing this is by including performance indicators for management including logistics and for each and every patient symbol in the system. If defined measures are not performed within defined time frames the patient may suffer a risk of unfavourable outcome.
The Emergo Train System is:
- well recogniced educational system for disaster management
- adaptable to any organisation or way of working and does not implicate or change any methodology, but still gives an objective result that can be used for further development of the own organisation
- based on extensive clinical experience, giving a sense of realism. One strength is the large patient bank with the connected programme, which is the core of the system
- in concordance with the ATLS program
